Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu evolved from Japanese Judo in Brazil, and it moved away from the big throws and takedowns to focus on submissions and technical ground work. Like judo, BJJ is designed to allow a smaller opponent to defeat a larger opponent by using leverage and position to overcome muscle.
A beginners class in BJJ will teach you how to pin an opponent to the ground, how to control (guard) and flip over (or sweep) an opponent trying to climb on top of you, how to safely apply joint locks and basic chokes. A typical class will include a calisthenic warm up, various mobility drills and technical exercises, an instructional session detailing a specific technique or series of techniques, and a session of free practice / sparring.
Training in BJJ will help you lose weight, increase your cardiovascular shape, and become stronger and more flexible. Most importantly, you will have the confidence that you have the skills and ability to take any assailant to the ground and come out on top.
Our BJJ classes start at ages 4 and up and focus on developmentally appropriate skills, games, techniques, and exercises. Our kids classes focus on the following traits: effort, attention, respect, and courage.
Our adult classes are appropriate for individuals of all ages, genders, and fitness levels. We recognize that everyone “has to go to work tomorrow”, so we prioritize safe and injury free training.
Unlike some BJJ gyms where there is a “survival of the strongest” attitude, our classes feature a friendly, team environment where everyone works together to bring out the best in their partners.
We offer world class advanced training in all grappling sports. Ask about our advanced classes and private training opportunities.
